Throughout this course we have learned many valuable things, but these are my top ten. To start out my five from the village project. The first thing that I learned was that I have to learn to be patient with the students, especially when they are struggling to listen to direction. I also gained the insight that all students come from different backgrounds and it is important to learn about who each of them are individually. Another thing is that it is important to be cooperative with the other teachers in the room and it is also important to create relationships with the students so they respect you in the classroom. Lastly I gained the insight that it is always alright to ask for help because everyone is going through similar situation and they all want to support each other. During class we had many discussions about our future in the classroom. One of the things that I found helpful was when people came in and talked to us. One of the things that I remember from those talks was that it is important to be adaptable because you can’t predict what will happen each day. We also learned about charter schools and how we can be impactful for students. Another thing that we gained insight about is meeting students where they are and that each student is unique and needs different types of help. To continue, we learned about report cards and how we can learn about the school based off of the report cards. Lastly, we learned that we never know where we will end up in our careers, but the impact we leave with our students will last forever, so it is important to be kind and leave a positive effect.
During my village project experience so far I have had the privilege of being able to meet so many students. One of my favorite parts about this experience is being able to see how they react when they learn something new. One of the most impactful things to be has been working with some of the students who need a little extra help in order to fully understand a concept or to make sure they are listening in class. It has been so rewarding to see all of these students earn the star student award at the end of the day and seeing how it can make them so happy. The main thing that I have learned from this experience is that it doesn’t take much to make a young student excited but they will only have a connection with you if you show that you care and put effort into helping them learn and grow.
Hearing different perspectives on teaching elevates my understanding of the profession because it shows that every teacher’s experience is different and they all have different paths they follow. From the two speakers that we have had in class, I learned that you never know where teaching will take you and how each school will be very different. I understand that teaching will come with new challenges everyday and the best way to adjust is to gain experience and knowledge. Our speaker Kris Newman talked about how important it is to get into the classroom as soon as possible. She feels this program will help aspiring teachers learn valuable knowledge about their future careers and how to adjust to each unique situation. She also shared how teaching brought her to many different areas including Russia to teach. Our other speaker Molly Lucareli shared the different schools that she taught it and how they were all unique. Her perspective of teaching illustrated how much time and dedication it takes to help your students thrive. She faced many challenges but in the end it was worth it when her students enjoyed her class and were learning. Hearing these other perspectives of teacher elevates my knowledge of how difficult teaching can be at times but how rewarding it is in the end.
